Phần thân bài của bài essay đóng vai trò như supporting sentences của đoạn văn. Đây là phần mà chúng ta sẽ triển khai đầy đủ chủ đề, chứng minh những ý chính và luận điểm của mình. Cấu trúc phần thân bài nên được sắp xếp tùy theo mục đích của bài, như là Chronological order hay Comparison/ Contrast. Đôi khi tùy vào yêu cầu đề bài, chúng ta phải kết hợp nhiều loại cấu trúc.

  • Topic sentence (Câu chủ đề): Nêu lên ý chính mà đoạn văn muốn nói tới.
  • Supports/ Supporting details: Phát triển câu topic sentence hay phát triển ý chính và đưa ra dẫn chứng (evidence) cụ thể.
  • Concluding sentence (Câu kết): Tóm tắt ý chính của đoạn văn đó.
• How to write a Body paragraph – Các bước viết một Body paragraph
  • Insert a topic sentence: The first sentence in a body paragraph that tells the reader what the main idea or claim of the paragraph will be (Câu đầu tiên phải giới thiệu cho người đọc biết được ý chính của đoạn văn đó).
  • Explain your topic sentence: Explain what you mean in greater detail (Giải thích câu chủ đề đó một cách chi tiết hơn).
  • Insert your evidence: Provide evidence or examples to support your idea or claim. This may include: case studies, statistics, documentary evidence, academic books or journal articles. (Đưa ra dẫn chứng hoặc ví dụ để chứng minh cho luận điểm của mình, có thể lấy từ những kết quả nghiên cứu, số liệu, chứng từ, sách vở và báo chí).
  • Explain your evidence: Consider the strengths and limitations of the evidence and examples that you have presented. Explain how your evidence supports your claim. i.e. how does it ‘prove’ your topic sentence? (Chọn dẫn chứng và ví dụ có sức thuyết phục, giải thích những dẫn chứng đó hỗ trợ cho luận điểm của mình như thế nào, ví dụ như nó đã chứng minh điều gì cho câu chủ đề).
  • Insert a concluding sentence: Summarize the main idea of the paragraph, and make clear how this paragraph supports your overall argument (Tóm tắt ý chính của đoạn văn, giải thích rõ đoạn văn này đã giúp được gì cho luận điểm chung của cả bài).

Ex:

(1) Upon a further examination, the mother’s constant pressure on the daughter was beginning to wear on her. (2) Jing-mei’s mother would consistently give her daughter tests and the expectations to succeed were high. (3) As the daughter states right after she failed to perform well at the climatic piano recital “After seeing my mother’s disappointed face once again, something inside me began to die. I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations” (Tan 1152). (4) After seeing the dissatisfaction from her mother’s face, the tests and hopes for success, began to eat away at her. It began to tear at the daughter’s emotional state. (5) The consistent disappointment pushed the daughter to the point where she would not become someone she is not.
