- When you are asked to analyze or express your opinion about an article or work, you need to know how to quote the details of the object, the book or to express your opinion. (Khi bạn được yêu cầu phân tích hoặc bày tỏ quan điểm của mình về một bài viết hay tác phẩm nào đó, bạn cần biết cách trích dẫn lại những chi tiết của đối tượng, của cuốn sách hoặc bày tỏ lại quan điểm của mình sao cho khéo léo.)
- Some words below are recommended to you so that you can use in your writing.
1. Say: used when quoting what someone said in a speech, or writing in a book, article, etc. (được sử dụng khi trích dẫn những gì ai đó đã nói trong bài phát biểu, hoặc viết trong một cuốn sách, bài viết,...)
Ex: In their report, they say that they see no reason to change the existing system.
2. Write: used when quoting what someone wrote in a book, an article, etc. (được sử dụng khi trích dẫn những gì ai đó đã viết trong một cuốn sách, bài báo,...)
Ex: Du Bois wrote that the United States was “a land of magnificent possibilities – the home of noble souls and generous people”.
3. Point out: used when referring to something in a book, article, etc. that seems particularly important and relevant (được sử dụng khi đề cập đến một cái gì đó trong một cuốn sách, bài viết,... quan trọng và liên quan)
Ex: As Rachel Carson points out in her book “Silent Spring”, chemicals used in farming are having a devastating effect on our countryside.
4. Note/ remark: to say you have noticed that something is right. (dùng để nói rằng bạn đã nhận thấy điều gì đó là đúng. Note và remark là những từ trang trọng.)
Ex: Lyons (1977) notes that all languages have tenses.
5. Observe: to say that you have noticed something is right, or when someone says a fact about life. (dùng để nói rằng bạn đã nhận thấy điều gì đó là đúng, hoặc khi nói rằng ai đó chỉ ra một sự thật về cuộc sống)
Ex: As Joseph Heller once observed, success and failure can be equally difficult to deal with.
6. State: used for people, reports, speaking rules. (được sử dụng cho người, các bài báo cáo, quy tắc nói.)
Ex: Parkinson’s Law states that “work expands to fill the time available”.
7. Argue: used when you want to say someone comes up with a different idea. (được sử dụng khi bạn muốn nói rằng ai đó đưa ra suy nghĩ trái ngược.)
Ex: Rousseau argued that people were equal.
8. Claim: used to quote something that someone else believes. (được sử dụng để trích dẫn điều gì đó mà người nào đó tin điều đó là đúng)
Ex: Doctors claimed to have found a cure for the desease.
9. According to...: used to say what people, organizations and reports have said. (được sử dụng khi nói những gì mọi người, tổ chức và báo cáo đã nói).
Ex: According to a recent survey by Time magazine, many people…
10. In the words of: used when saying exactly what someone said. (được sử dụng khi nói chính xác những gì ai đó đã nói).
Ex: In the words of John Marc, the reproduction is….
