Summarizing (tóm tắt) là một kỹ năng khá quan trọng trong writing, giúp cho người viết thu gọn các nguồn tài liệu dài một cách cô đọng và súc tích.

1. Keys to writing a good summary - Các tiêu chí để viết một bài tóm tắt hay
   • Dùng từ vựng và cấu trúc câu của chính mình.
   • Summary thì ngắn hơn nhiều so với paraphrase, chỉ bao gồm ý chính và dẫn chứng quan trọng, loại bỏ những ý không quan trọng, chi tiết nhỏ nhặt, ví dụ cụ thể, suy nghĩ và ý kiến cá nhân của tác giả.
   • Không thay đổi nghĩa của bản gốc.
2. Stages of summarizing – Các bước viết tóm tắt
   • Read the original text carefully and check any new or difficult vocabulary (Đọc văn bản gốc cẩn thận và tra những từ vựng mới hoặc từ khó).
   • Make notes of the key points, paraphrasing where possible (Ghi chú những ý chính, paraphrase những chỗ cần thiết).
   • Mark the key points by underlining or highlighting (Đánh dấu những ý chính bằng cách gạch dưới hoặc tô đậm).
   • Write the summary from your notes, re-organizing the structure if needed (Viết tóm tắt từ các ghi chú, thay đổi hoặc sắp xếp lại cấu trúc nếu cần thiết).
   • Check the summary to ensure it is accurate and nothing important has been changed or lost (Kiểm tra lại bài tóm tắt, đảm bảo sự chính xác và không có ý nào quan trọng bị thay đổi hoặc thiếu sót).

     Original passage (85 words)

     Language is the main means of communication between people. But so many different languages have developed that language has often been a barrier rather than an aid to understanding among people. For many years, people have dreamed of setting up an international universal language which all people could speak and understand. The arguments in favor of a universal language are economic ties might be much closer, and good will might increase between countries (Kispert).

     Paraphrase (63 words, about the same length as the original)

     Humans communicate through language. Because there are so many different languages, however, people around the world have a difficult time understanding one another. Some people have wished for a universal international language that speakers all over the world could understand. Their reasons are straightforward and clear. A universal language would build cultural and economic bonds. It would also create better feelings among countries (Kispert).

     Summary (28 words, much shorter)

     People communicate through language; however, having different languages creates communication barriers. A universal language could bring countries together culturally and economically as well as increase good feelings among them (Kispert).
